If restarting and re-attaching doesn't fix the problem, try reinstalling the driver for your Surface Cover.

Open Device Manager, and expand Keyboards section, and then right-click Surface Type Cover Filter Device. Select Uninstall device OK.

Whenever it was connected, either it'd cause the Surface to sleep (as soon as it was connected), or the trackpad would stop working. I decided to update all the drivers/firmware via the Surface Pro 3 MSI. Windows Updates claims to be up to date. Device Manager states that the Type Cover driver is missing. Where exactly do I get the driver for this? I looked under keyboards in device manager and there is no surface cover type listed. There are four HID keyboard devices listed. I looked at their properties and none of them seemed relevant and they were all working properly. Booting up to the UEFI shows a Type Cover listed there; I disabled, rebooted, and enabled it with no result. In the search box type device manager and select the Device Manager; In the results, click the arrow next to the Keyboards; Right-click on Surface Type Cover Filter Device option and then click on Uninstall Ok. Once done, restart your Surface. Connect it to the internet and it will automatically download and install the Surface Cover. Reinstall the Surface Cover driver (does not apply to Surface Laptop) If restarting and re-attaching doesn't fix the problem, try reinstalling the driver for your Surface Cover.   1. Select the search box in the taskbar, enter device manager, and select Device Manager in the results.

  2. Expand Keyboards.

  3. Right-click Surface Type Cover Filter Device.

  4. Select Uninstall > OK.

  5. Restart your Surface. It'll automatically download and install the Surface Cover driver the next time you connect to the Internet.

For Surface Book

  1. Select the search box in the taskbar, enter device manager, and select Device Manager in the results

  2. Expand Keyboards.

  3. Right-click *NEED DRIVER NAME*

  4. Select Uninstall > OK.
    Note: There are two drivers listed. One for the Clipboard battery, and one for the keyboard battery. Perform steps 3 and 4 on both drivers listed.

  5. Restart your Surface. It'll automatically download and install the Surface Keyboard drivers the next time you connect to the Internet.
